CHAPTER 13

Our Relationships Transcend Time

IT’S QUITE COMMON that the first thing that piques people’s interest in investigating past lives is a question about a current relationship. Relationship dynamics can be so challenging, and despite whatever we try, we often can’t seem to get past a repeating pattern. Where did that pattern come from? How do we break its hold on us? Or we meet someone with whom we feel an instant connection, causing us to wonder when and in what circumstances we have known that individual in the past. Often the question comes from a need to reconnect with someone we have lost, either through death or separation. We want to be reassured that we have been with that loved one before and, therefore, we can rest in the knowledge that we will be with him/her again in the future.

From everything I have learned as a past life therapist, we tend to travel in groups. Most people in the field refer to a “soul group,” a group of souls with whom we have a strong connection and with whom we choose to reincarnate into a similar time and place so we can be together on the human plane. Usually this is because of a strong love connection. At times we may find that these are the individuals who also challenge us the most; most likely we have agreed on a soul level to come together to work out negative dynamics or to help each other with important areas of personal growth. Beyond our core soul group, however, we will also reencounter many of the lesser players in our personal dramas across the ages. It’s fairly unusual to find someone who plays a truly significant role in your life, be it positive or negative, whom you have not encountered sometime before.

It’s intriguing to see how the relationships change. In one lifetime we might be husband and wife, in another master and slave, in another business rivals, and in another parent and child. We swap genders. We swap family positions. We swap power and influence with each other. But we often see a similar dynamic arising no matter what the official profile of the relationship. Often we are working on a destructive pattern or issue until we can get it right, do it differently. And sometimes we are souls who have such a strong love connection that we just want to be together again in happiness and harmony.

This brings up the question of soul mates. This term is used quite often by clients and in the general population to mean the one unique individual who you are meant to be with, often across multiple lifetimes. Is there really such a thing as a unique soul mate, an eternal one? I believe the term “soul mate,” as it is conventionally used, is a bit misinterpreted. It is actually possible for most of us to renew deep, abiding love relationships with many different partners from our past lives. If encountered at the right time and in the right place, it’s quite possible that we have more than one soul mate in this lifetime.
